ABOUT
Mike O’Meara is an industry expert with 44 years of successful experience in the electric utility company industry while working at Arizona Public Service Company (APS). He retired from APS and is now working as an independent consultant. Mike specializes in commercial/industrial electric service requirements, electric metering requirements, metering equipment design, and applying the National Electric Code (NEC) to equipment on the utility side of the service point. Mike has a proven ability to build relationships and communicate across a wide spectrum of industry professionals. He understands that electric metering requirements impact a vast network of industries and strives to stay involved in the leading edge of developing and maintaining electrical systems that provide a safe and cost-effective method of providing electric service to utility customers. He has served on multiple organizations within the electric industry and has been repeatedly recognized for his leadership and professionalism in these efforts.
Mike’s accomplishments include:

Chairman of the Arizona Public Service Company (APS) Electric Service Requirements Manual (ESRM) committee for 25 years, ending with Mike’s retirement in 2020. The ESRM committee establishes construction, installation, and design requirements necessary for the safe installation of electric services to APS customers.

Chairman of the Edison Electric Institute Electric Light and Power National Electric Code (EEI EL&P NEC) Task Force for the 3-year 2017 NEC code-cycle. Mike was an EEI Task Force member for 21 years, from 1998 through 2019. The EEI Task Force sponsors members on NEC code-making panels (CMPs) to represent the utility industry in the code-making process. EEI sponsored Mike to multiple NEC Code Making Panels during his time on the committee. Most significantly, he served on CMP 5 for the last several code-cycles.

Vice-Chairman of the Electric Utility Service Equipment Requirements Committee (EUSERC) at the time of his retirement. Mike was a member of EUSERC for a total of 33 years, from 1987 to 2020, and held several positions on the committee during his tenure. As a member, he helped coordinate electric utilities, manufacturers, UL and NEMA to establish electric metering equipment requirements that promote safe work practices, meet NEC and UL requirements, and are efficient to manufacture and install.

Sr. Past-President for the local Central Arizona Chapter of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI). Mike has been an IAEI member since 1990 and has held several positions within the local IAEI chapter. He continues to stay involved with the IAEI efforts to provide electrical education and promote electrical safety in the industry.

Mike held multiple positions within APS up until his retirement, including Field Operations Foreman, Field Operations Section Leader, and Meter Technical Specialist. Mike also successfully completed a 3-year state-certified Polyphase Meterman Apprenticeship. At the time of his retirement, Mike’s responsibilities included meter engineering work on specialized meter systems, Alternative Energy systems consulting, electrical code consulting and Chairman of the APS ESRM committee.
